Alaska Region 10 organization has
over 200 Section 8(a) certified companies. These companies
range from the largest corporations to the small startups. Our
association has members nationwide and are coordinating efforts to organize a
National Association.
The
Alaska 8(a) Association originated during a week long Pilot Program in
Girdwood, Alaska, hosted by the Small Business Administration,
University of Alaska Anchorage and Howard University. During
this time, the attending twenty-eight 8(a) contractors discussed the
benefits of creating an association to unify 8(a)
contractors.
On June 1, 1998, the
Alaska 8(a) Association became incorporated as a 501c6 Trade
Association. Since this date, the association's momentum has
increased. Beginning in 1998, with the original 28 contractors,
membership has grown to over 100 members, including Regular, Associate,
Agency, and Lifetime Members.
Over the past seven years, the
Alaska 8(a) Association has held three Annual Spring Conferences, six
Annual Meeting & Dinners, as well as monthly luncheons and regular educational
opportunities. These events provided opportunities to meet key
industry leaders, prime contractors, contracting officers, government
contacts, and political advocates.
In 2004, the
association strengthened relationships with SBA, PTAC, SBDC, and State of
Alaska's Civil Right's Office, as well as a new alliance with Alaska
Chapter, Associated General Contractors, to increase member promotion,
visibility, public relations, and networking.
The Alaska 8(a) Association
is the oldest and largest association of its kind in the nation.
This is widely due to the dedication and commitment of the board of
directors, their evolving vision for the association, and the
continued support
of our members.
